The Impossible Years is a 1968 American comedy film directed by Michael Gordon and starring David Niven, Shirley Jones, and Gig Young. The film is about a middle-aged couple who are trying to adjust to their children's growing independence. The film opens with the Smith family celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. The couple, George (Niven) and Edna (Jones), are happily married, but they are also starting to feel the effects of their children's growing independence. Their oldest son, David (Ted Bessell), is about to graduate from college and move away from home. Their daughter, Susan (Julie Budd), is also about to leave for college. George and Edna are trying to adjust to their new empty nest, but they are also struggling to deal with their own changing relationship. They are starting to argue more and more, and they are finding it difficult to connect with each other. One day, George meets a young woman named Jenny (Cynthia Myers) at a party. Jenny is everything that Edna is not: young, beautiful, and carefree. George is immediately attracted to Jenny, and he begins to spend more and more time with her. Edna is suspicious of George's relationship with Jenny, and she starts to worry that he is having an affair. She confronts George about it, but he denies it. The situation comes to a head when George and Jenny go on a weekend trip together. Edna finds out about the trip, and she is furious. She confronts George and tells him that she wants a divorce. George is devastated by Edna's decision, but he knows that he has to let her go. He agrees to the divorce, and he moves out of the house. George and Edna spend the next few months trying to adjust to their new lives. They both start dating other people, but they find it difficult to move on. One day, George and Edna meet by chance at a restaurant. They talk for a long time, and they realize that they still love each other. They decide to give their marriage another chance, and they live happily ever after.
